Plainfield High School Central Campus 12th Annual Needy Family Drive for the Holidays
In the true spirit of the season, Plainfield Central High School PTSO is again, for the twelfth year, sponsoring a drive for needy families in our community. The goal is to provide holiday dinners and individual gifts for several of these needy families.
Our schools are growing and changing every year. We are again asking school organizations for help in providing for our community’s needy families. The needy families have children in all levels of our school system. In the past, the various schools have been tremendous in providing for several families.
The Needy Family Drive began in 1992 with 3 families receiving gifts and a food basket. Each year the program has expanded and in 2003 we were able to reach out to 17 families within the Plainfield community. The families are carefully chosen by Mrs. Karen Hamilton and are kept anonymous. All families receive gifts and enough food for a holiday dinner. Mrs. Hamilton then sees to the distribution and pick-up of the gifts and food.
In past years, we have been very fortunate to receive generous monetary and food donations from groups such as Central School PTA, Walker’s Grove PTA, Wesmere, and Timber Ridge students, Grand Prairie and Lakewood Falls, both PCHS and PSHS staff, and various businesses in sponsoring the drive.
In 1997 the PCHS staff began providing gifts for the entire Giving Tree set up at the high school. And then in 2002 Plainfield South High School was kind enough to begin the Giving Tree tradition.
Each year the entire community of Plainfield along with their tremendous generosity, makes a difference in our ability to purchase gifts for all the families.
