The Modern Language Department at Plainfield South High School will be sponsoring its annual Foreign Language Week from March 14-18. The theme this year is “Around the World in 7 Days”, and the focus of the week’s events will be on the foreign languages taught at PSHS: American Sign Language(ASL), French, German, and Spanish.
Leading up to, and during Foreign Language Week, students enrolled in foreign language classes will participate in a variety of activities promoting the study of foreign language. Before Foreign Language Week begins officially, students will begin preparation by creating posters in their classes for a contest with the theme “Around the World in 7 Days”. When students arrive in the morning on Monday, March 14, these posters will be adorning the hallways of the school. There will also be signs in French, German, Spanish, and ASL labeling common areas of our school building. Students will also be making locker signs, identifying themselves as foreign language students. In addition, the display case by the main office will also exhibit flags, realia, and art items from the different countries.
Each day of the week will promote a specific language (Monday – ASL, Tuesday – French, Thursday – German, Friday – Spanish). Music in the specific language will be played before school and during the passing periods, and anyone heard speaking that language by a foreign language teacher or foreign language club member will receive an “I am loved” button (pin) in that language. On Wednesday there will be an extra treat when the Metamora High School Steel Band performs in the cafeteria during all lunch periods.
Faculty and staff will also have an opportunity to get involved along with the students, in Foreign Language Week. Each day in the Media Center, there will be a trivia contest to test their knowledge about the language and culture of the day. Prizes will be awarded.
