Reaching for Our Destinies Sculpture Installed at Plainfield South High School

Reaching for our Destinies, a seven foot high cold cast bronze sculpture mounted on a four foot high Bronze Sculpture of boy and girlmosaic covered column is to be installed in front of the Plainfield South High School, 7800 Caton Farm Road in Joliet, on Friday, March 11 at noon (weather permitting).

The sculpture/mosaic column was sponsored by The City of Joliet, District 1 Councilman Joseph Shetina in cooperation with Friends of Community Public Art (FCPA).

Reaching for our Destinies depicts a high school age boy and girl emerging from limestone cliffs and reaching towards their future. Plainfield South art instructor Denise  Albright worked with other art teachers Stacey Candela, Josette Twait and Michael Freitag, art club and over thirty students creating the hand-cut ceramic mosaic that will cover the column. A student's design proposal was chosen from over thirty student submissions. FCPA artist Kathleen Scarboro created the sculpture in Friends of Community Pubic Art studios at 310 N. Ottawa St. in downtown Joliet.

One female and one male PSHS student served as the models for the sculpture.  They represent the common goals of the diverse populations at Plainfield South High School.

In their hands is a circular form containing symbols of education.  The symbols are: a book, a leaf representing botany, a treble clef representing music, an atom representing science, a half moon representing astronomy; the French word "ciel" representing foreign language study.
