District 202 Building Bond Referendum Slated For April 5 Ballot

The Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 Board of Education voted last night to place a $220,495,000 referendum on the April 5, 2005 ballot.   The referendum will support a building plan to construct eight schools in three years.  The building plan calls for the construction of five elementary schools (opening in 2007, 2008, and 2009), two middle schools (opening in 2007 and 2009) and a high school (opening in 2008).

The school district based its decision on enrollment projections that include an average of 2,400 new students each year to the District over the next five years. The District’s current enrollment is 22,075 students. The projected enrollment when the buildings included in the referendum are completed is estimated at 33,147.

The proposed referendum would increase the Bond tax rate by 5 cents, from the current rate of $1.05 per $100 of assessed valuation to $1.10. A home valued at $250,000 is estimated to have an increase of $39.17 on the 2006 tax bill. The tax rate is estimated to remain stable after that time. The district has worked to structure the bonds to have the smallest impact on taxpayers while meeting the construction needs of the rapidly growing school district.
