Service learning students save dog, collect for food pantry
Service learning students from a pair of Plainfield Community
Consolidated School District 202 middle schools made a difference in
their community in recent weeks. Heritage Grove Middle School students
sponsored a food drive for the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry, and
those at Ira Jones Middle School adopted a neglected dog named
"Bosco" and raised money to cover his medical costs.
From May 1-5, students in classes taught by Tracy Kania and William
Stockey sponsored a food drive for the Plainfield Interfaith Food
Pantry, which supports more than 90 families in the Plainfield area.
Over that five-day period, Heritage Grove students contributed nearly
1,400 items for the pantry through collections in their homerooms. The
most generous rooms at each grade level were treated to donuts and juice
for their efforts.
At Ira Jones, students in classes led by Jennifer Nashkoff and Amy
Rosillo participated in a fundraiser for the Plainfield Humane Society.
The group adopted "Bosco," a dog found neglected in a small cage in
January. Bosco, which could barely move in his cage and was described as
"skin and bones," was covered with sores and tested positive for
heartworm. To help cover the costs for his recovery, Ira Jones put on
"Donuts for Bosco" each Friday, selling fresh baked donuts for 75
cents each. The school raised $656.96, which more than covered their
four-legged friend's medical care. In fact, when Bosco is adopted, his
new owner will not have to pay any remaining medical experiences. The
