District 202 service learning students active over the next month
Service learning students at four Plainfield Community Consolidated
School District 202 elementary schools will be quite active over the
next month, making contributions to their local community in a variety
of ways.
At Creekside Elementary School, students in Sandi Farrington's class
will be collecting empty glass baby food jars, which will in turn be
donated to the American Cancer Society for use in its "Relay for
Life" event at Plainfield High School-Central Campus, scheduled for
June 10-11. Sponsors for the relay will use the jars to create
luminaries to recognize loved ones. Creekside's drive for baby food
jars will run from April 18-25 at the school (13909 S. Budler Road,
Plainfield).
Doreen Furmanski's students at Meadow View Elementary School will
deliver student-made baby blankets to the Daybreak Homeless Shelter in
Joliet on Thursday, April 20.
Students from Arnette Schwimmer's class at Wesmere Elementary Schools
will travel to Kline Creek Farm in Winfield on Monday, April 24. They
will learn about farming in the late 1800's and inventions from that
time that affected agriculture.
Service learning students from Creekside, Wesmere and Lakewood Falls
Elementary School will present hand-tied "lap blankets" to residents
at Lakewood Nursing Home on Monday, May 8.
Finally, students in Sarah Kuechle's class at Lakewood Falls will
learn about fire safety from the Channahon Fire Department on Tuesday,
May 16. Students will be able to try on protective clothing, enter the
"smoke house" or ride the "bucket."
