District 202 invites community to help name new schools
As Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 prepares to open nine new schools in the next five years, the Board of Education is asking for suggested names for the upcoming elementary and middle school campuses. The new high school has already been named Plainfield East High School, but the Board is asking for help in naming the two elementary schools and one middle school that are scheduled to open in Fall 2007.
Opening Fall 2007
* Elementary school - Crossings of Wolf Creek subdivision (northwest corridor, Plainfield)
* Elementary school - Windsor Ridge subdivision (southwest corridor, Joliet)
* Middle school - Essington Road, north of Foxridge Farms subdivision (northeast corridor, Bolingbrook)
The Board of Education is asking for suggested names that center around the theme of historical figures, events, places or concepts that have had local impact.
For example, Walker’s Grove Elementary School is named after the 1829 settlement that was named for the first settler in what is now Will County, Jesse Walker. Lincoln Elementary School is named after Abraham Lincoln, who as a young lawyer, rode the circuit between Ottawa and Chicago in the 1850s. Since Plainfield was almost exactly halfway between the two it is quite likely that he passed through town many times for food, drink, water for his horse, or perhaps even to sleep.
District 202 teachers may be able to use this as a class project and submit a name or two from a “consensus building” activity with their classes. However, the district encourages suggestions from its entire community!
All suggested names should be submitted to Tony Hamilton in the Community Relations Department at the Administration Center by Friday, October 13, 2006. You can e-mail thamilto@learningcommunity202.org or fax to his attention at (815) 436-7824. Please use the form located at the top of the page for submissions.
After the deadline for submitting suggested names passes, the submissions will be compiled by the Community Relations Department and given to the Board of Education’s Site Management Committee for review at its November meeting. The committee will review the suggestions and provide recommendations for full Board of Education review and approval at a future meeting.
