Not sure who is more excited about school starting next week - the students, or the parents. Ok, who's kidding who? Obviously it's the parents...
More District 202 news this week, including pictures of the ribbon cuttings for both of our new schools. But first, a few important items:
- The District 202 Board of Education will meet in regular session on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the district administration center, 15732 Howard Street, Plainfield. The public portion of the meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. The full agenda will be posted later today on the district web site (www.learningcommunity202.org) under "Board Docs."
- Kudos to Community Relations Coordinator Lauren McFarland and Web Designer Ryan Boyce who both won awards from the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association, for their work on several district publications.
- All four District 202 high schools will host orientations for incoming freshmen, all new high school students to the district and their parents. See the story below for more information.
- We've posted the Elementary & Middle School Lunch Menu for Aug. 21-22 on the front page of the district web site so that those parents and students can plan accordingly.
- Another reminder that Information about the 2008-2009 Bus Runs is now posted on the front page of the District 202 web site (www.learningcommunity202.org). It is also posted under "Parents and Students" and "Schools." PLEASE NOTE: Bus assignments and route information can change because of changes to enrollment. Please continue to check this information frequently as school approaches.
- A final reminder that he Plainfield Police Department will conduct an “active shooter drill” at Plainfield North High School from 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008. The police will use this drill to assess and improve their procedures for responding to a situation involving an intruder with a gun. Drill participants will begin gathering and staging for the exercise at 7 a.m. at Heritage Grove Middle School. Various roads around Plainfield North High School will be temporarily closed and traffic will be rerouted during the drill, as it would be during a real crisis. The entire exercise should be complete, the area cleared and roads re-opened by about 12:30 p.m.

Finally, we've gotten numerous calls this week from elementary school parents wondering when they'll receive information about their children's classroom assignments. The short answer: the cards were mailed Tuesday and should be in mail boxes in the next couple of days.
The longer answer: classroom assignments are significantly impacted by enrollment. And, as anyone who has lived here for a while knows, our enrollment changes day to day -- even hour to hour. To complicate matters, enrollment has been unusually slow over the summer, but unusually high over the last few weeks.
Publishing class assignments before enrollment is "stable" (whatever that means in D. 202) inevitably leads to lots of mistakes and changes the first week of school. So, we try to wait as long as possible, without waiting "too long." We apologize for any inconvenience that this causes, but ask everyone to be patient in light of the unique challenges created by our size and growth.
