District 202 Education Partners, hello!
Back from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and the bears send their greetings -- the furry, four-legged berry eating variety, not the Chicago football team.
The District 202 news continues, even in the dog days of summer. But first a few notes:
- Kudos to Assistant Superintendent of Student Services Sharon Gronemeyer, and Student Services Directors Pat Snider, Jill Carlson and Susan Jawor, who have been invited to speak at the national Conference for Special Education Administrators this fall on the subject of "Response to Interventions."
- Retired District 202 Assistant Superintendent Jon Balke will present a new exhibit of his photos titled, "Black, White and Gray Studies in Silver" from August 1-29, 2008 at the Ainsworth Gallery, 721 Taylor Street, Joliet. An opening reception will be held tonight (August 1) from 7-9 p.m.
- Please mark your calendars: the ribbon cutting for Plainfield East High School will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, and for Elizabeth Eichelberger Elementary School at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 14, 2008. The community is invited to both. And, speaking of our two newest schools, we've posted new construction photos of both on their individual web sites.
- New Bonnie McBeth Learning Center Principal Mina Griffith recently appeared on Plainfield Television Channel 6's "District 202 News and Views" talking about early learning. The interview is posted on the front page of the District 202 web site (www.learningcommunity202.org) under "District 202 on TV."
- A reminder that applications are being taken through August 29, 2008 for the second-annual Bonnie McBeth Early Learning Scholarship. This year, one teacher who is doing graduate-level work in early learning will receive $1,500 to help with his or her studies. Applicants do not have to work for District 202. Finally, The Plainfield Police Department will conduct an “active shooter drill” at Plainfield North High School from 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2008. The police will use this drill to assess and improve their procedures for responding to a situation involving an intruder with a gun. District 202 is happy to partner with the police in this important exercise. Drill participants will begin gathering and staging for the exercise at 7 a.m. at Heritage Grove Middle School. Various roads around Plainfield North High School will be temporarily closed and traffic will be rerouted during the drill, as it would be during a real crisis. The entire exercise should be complete, the area cleared and roads re-opened by about 12:30 p.m. For more information please call Plainfield Police Department Commander John Konopek at (815) 439-4803.
