How can I help my child learn a second language?
- Encourage your child to teach you words that he/she has learned.
- Point out articles on items in the news about foreign countries.
- Before vocabulary tests, ask him/her words in English and have him/her say and write the words in Spanish.
- Help make flashcards in Spanish. Shuffle the cards and quiz your child.
- Look for word associations and mnemonic devices to learn vocabulary.
- Encourage him/her to read out loud in Spanish.
- Use Spanish at the dinner table, in the car, at the mall, etc.
- Watch Spanish movies and/or television programs.
- Be enthusiastic about when he/she is learning.
- Invite your child to use Spanish with native speakers.
- Encourage him/her to use Spanish with his/her friends.
- Applaud what he/she knows. Remember that it takes years to learn a second language. Don’t expect fluency after one year.
