Welcome to American Literature
Mrs. Hornik
This is a challenging course for college bound juniors and seniors. Students will benefit from the knowledge of the American tradition in literature. They will also gain experience responding to literature on personal and analytical levels.
September: Native American myths with storytelling as oral literature.
First explorers and Puritans – primary and secondary accounts.
October: Revolutionary Rhetoric: Spoken literature that helped create and define America and her early leaders as well as spark our love of debate and challenge.
Persuasive writing: Students will write an essay using literary, rhetorical devices.
Late October/ November: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Students will read about a torrid love triangle in a story that explores predestination, moral choices, and social ills.
