This is a challenging course for
college-bound sophomores,
juniors, and seniors who love to express themselves with creative
words. They
will work independently to write ten original poems, four short
stories, and a drama
during the semester. Writers will also create a compelling portfolio
that
features their finest, revised pieces and demonstrates who they are as
individual writers.
We work
weekly on a writing technique, such
as writing figuratively using metaphors and sensory description,
creating poetic imagery, and capturing the reader.
Each student has signed a contract intending to complete specific assignments of their choosing. Students do not have set weekly deadlines; however, I recommend submitting a written piece at least every other week. Students must complete a specific number of pieces in a six-week marking period. I only accept one short story or five poems each week. Students who do not submit often are in danger of failing the course.
