Course Description:
English Literature will be
presented within an historical context. First semester, the course will
begin with the Anglo-Saxon writings, and students will learn about the
progression of English literature from its earliest stages through the 17th
century. Selected authors and works from the Anglo-Saxon, Medieval,
Renaissance, and 17th century periods will be noted. Second
semester, literature from the Restoration, 18th century, Romantic,
Victorian, and Modern/Contemporary periods will be discussed along with the
historical significance of those eras. Important developments in the
English language will be reviewed throughout the course. In addition to
the extensive reading, students will be further developing their literary
analysis skills in writing. The course is designed to give students a
broader sense of the development of literature as a foundation for further
study at the college level.
