Chapter 5 Midpoint method

 

There is a third method for estimating the area under the curve.  Since the other two methods involved changing the height of the rectangle you might expect that this method will also change the factor of the rectangle that determines the height.  As a matter of fact, that is correct.  In this method the height is found based on the y-coordinate of the midpoint of the rectangle’s base.  Here is a visual aid:
