Course Title: INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA II
Grade Open to: 11-12 Semester: 1 & 2 Credit:
1.0
Prerequisite Course/Grade Recommendation: Two years of math
including geometry and teacher placement.
This course is designed to fulfill admission requirements for a
four-year college. Some of the topics that will be included in this course are:
real number and variable operations, equations, inequalities, graphs,
polynomials, functions (which may include linear, quadratic, absolute value,
polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic), complex numbers, matrices, systems
of equations, rational expressions, and an introduction to conics and
trigonometry. Topics will be approached from a graphical, numerical, and
symbolic view. Completion of 2-Year Algebra 1-Part 1 and Part 2 (2 year
program), Geometry: Concepts and Applications, and Intermediate Algebra 2 will
fulfill college entrance requirements.
Graphing calculator required (TI-83+ or TI-84, TI-84+ preferred).
Grades:
The grades will be weighted as follows: 20% for your daily work/homework, 60% for assessments (quizzes, tests, and projects), 15% for the semester final and 5% for the semester midterm. Your earned points will be divided by the total possible points and then multiplied by the proper weight to obtain your percent, then a letter grade will be assigned:
90% - 100% A 60%
- 69% D
80% - 89% B 59%
and below F
70% - 79% C
Tests will always be worth 100 points and will be given upon completion of a chapter or course outcomes/goals. Quizzes will be given periodically (announced and unannounced) and can be worth any amount of points. All homework assignments will be worth 5 points based on completion. That means if you do the homework completely, you get full credit. It is the students’ responsibility to check the answers when going over the homework in class. Homework quizzes can be given or even homework assignments can be taken for a homework quiz grade anytime. All the work must be done in pencil, blue or black ink. Extra credit can be given for the entire class, but not for certain individuals.
Materials:
3. Book (Prentice Hall Mathematics, Algebra 2)
4. Graphing calculator
5. Composition notebook
Notes:
Every student is encouraged to take notes because they may be allowed on a test or quiz.
Make-Up Work: (Also
refer to Student Handbook, pages 43-44)
Assignments will be posted on the calendar on a weekly basis. When absent one day, students are responsible to turn in the previous day’s homework and then get the homework from the day missed. If students are gone for one day, you have one day to make up the missed homework. If a student misses more than one day, that student will be given an equal amount of days he/she missed to make up the assignments. If a test or quiz was announced prior to an absence, the students are still responsible to take that test or quiz on time with the entire class. Make up tests or quizzes are to be done before or after school.
Upon completion of a chapter and the chapter test, no make-up work will be collected or accepted for points.
For any unexcused absences, a ZERO will be given for any work unless the student clears their absence with the Dean.
Detentions: (Refer
to Student Handbook, pages 45-55)
Detentions will be given if any of the classroom expectations are broken. I will give verbal warnings no more than twice!
Tardies: (Refer
to Student Handbook, pages 48)
You will be considered tardy if you are not in your seat when the bell rings. If you show up to class more than five minutes late, you will have an unexcused absence, which means no credit for the day’s work.
Rest Rooms:
Bathroom use will only be allowed in emergency situations.
Food and Drinks:
There will be none of any kind in
my classroom.
Electronics
There will be none of any kind allowed in my classroom. That means no IPods, cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, etc. This is a math department policy.
Help?
I will be available in Room 205 before and after school. Please feel free to come ask for help. Please set up appointments ahead of time. Do not wait until it is too late.
By signing this contract, I agree to all the rules stated above and will accept the consequences that result from breaking a rule or rules.
