Syllabus 2007-2008 school year

IND English 3

Period 4 Room 102

Teacher:  Randi Oehlke

Materials Needed Daily:

n     Pen or pencil

n     paper (can be spiral or looseleaf)

n     Current reading material and work correlating to it (stored in the classroom)

n     If any other material is needed for special projects, I will let the students know in advance

Expectations;

n     Arrive to class and be in your seat when the bell rings

n     Arrive to class prepared to follow directions and complete the work for the day

n     Follow the ED behavior program

n     Stay in your seat until the bell rings

Procedures:

n     I will always write the schedule or agenda for the day on the board in the front of the room.

n     I will always do my best to leave a few minutes at the end of class for “random free time.”  If, for some reason, we do not get to RFT, and your behavior is not the reason we went too long, I will include extra for the next day.

n     I will issue tally marks for being on time, being prepared, appropriate behavior and participation.  These tally marks will be monitored for the entire grading period and will transfer into extra credit at the end of the marking period.

n     Each day will start with a “bell ringer” activity.  The schedule for “bell ringers” is as follows:

o       Monday;  riddle or brain teaser (2nd semester add edits)

o       Tuesday:  Comprehension work – separate from the current novel we are reading in class

o       Wednesday:  Journal- I give you a topic, and you write 7 sentences on it.  2nd semester the number of sentences goes up to 10.

o       Thursday: Comprehension work – separate from the current novel we are reading in class

o       Friday:  Edits – I take an article and put lots of mistakes in it.  You fix it and then we go over it as a group

n     After bell ringers, we will continue the lessons on the topic at hand, whether it be reading material assignments, writing assignments, presentations, reviewing for tests, or projects.

Novel/reading material schedule:

Semester 1:  The Great Gatsby  tudents do not need to purchase this book, as I should have enough copies to pass around.  This book will take almost the entire first semester.

          Semester 2:  To be determined

If students need to purchase this book, I will let them know in advance and if I can get them any type of discount.

Each chapter will have a set schedule once we begin to read the assigned novel:

n     First, students will be given vocabulary, which they can work on in groups.  Students are expected to write the definition, part of speech and a sentence for each word.

n     Second, we will read the book and complete the study guides.

n     We will review the answers to the study guides

n     We will then have quizzes every second chapter.

There will be 2 midterm exams as well as 2 final for this class.  Both midterms and the finals will include editing, writing, comprehension and questions from the reading material covered in class up to that point.

Grading:

Everything we do in class is worth points

Points for vocabulary are calculated by taking the number of words and multiplying by three.  (one point each for the part of speech, definition and sentence)  However, I will not accept incomplete work.  If a student completes everything but the sentences, he or she will receive a zero on that vocabulary.

I issue points for participation and attention during the reading of the chapter and reviewing the study guides.

Points for the study guides are calculated by how many questions are included on the particular study guide.

Points for quizzes and tests are listed within each section.

Grades for each marking period are figured by adding the total points awarded for each assignment and then dividing by the total points offered for the marking period.  After those grades are figured, any extra credit points (tally points described above) are added up for the marking period and then divided by 5.  That resulting number is then added to the total points awarded for the marking period.  Students could quite possibly raise a marking period grade an entire letter grade, depending on behavior and participation in class.

IF, AT ANY REASON, STAFF MEMBERS BELIEVE STUDENTS ARE CHEATING, THERE WILL BE NO SECOND CHANCES OR REMINDERS… THE STUDENT WILL RECEIVE A ZERO.

ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING AFTER A QUIZ OR TEST IS HANDED OUT.
