Some Ways to
Read Actively
The most
common way to mark a text is by highlighting with a marker or pen. Highlight important words, phrases and
sentences. If you can’t mark in a book,
write on sticky notes and attach them to the page.
Active
readers ask many questions such as, “What does this mean? Why is the writer talking about this?
Take
notes to keep track of what you have learned so far. Try to answer the questions that you are asking. Clarify main ideas and details
Listen
to your own thoughts, feelings and reactions as you read. Think about how the writing makes you feel
and what it reminds you of in your own life.
See
the people and actions that the author is describing. Use your sensory details.
Record your impressions in your journal.
Active
readers are always thinking about what will happen next. Stop and write your predictions as you make
your way through the text.
