Math

The students are learning to add and subtract with regrouping.  They are also using estimation as a strategy to check their work.  During the second quarter we will begin working on multiplication and division fact families. The students will also learn to make change from ten dollars.

Reading
books and elephant
 Students are taking their reading to a new level in third grade. They are moving from learning to read to reading to learn. To help support your child's growth in reading, students are expected to read 300 minutes a month outside of school. At the start of each month your child will bring home a reading log. Please record the number of minutes read each day and send the completed log back to school at the end of the month. If your child reads for just 15 minutes a day, he will exceed this reading goal.

Writing

This quarter the students are working on the writing trait of organization. They are learning how to organize their writing effectively, write interesting leads, and provide thumbs- up details that support the main idea in their writing
 They will be writing a narrative patterened after the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.

  Science
lab   
We have begun our Earth's History unit. This unit covers the layers of the Earth, forces that change the Earth's surface, and rocks & minerals.  The students will be exploring  rock formation,  properties of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock, and the importance of soil.
