Curriculum Development


Due to rapid student enrollment and the fact that students in District 202 will probably receive instruction at more than one campus, it has become increasingly important to develop curriculum within a PreK-12 framework. District 202 has had strong curriculum development at the elementary, middle and high school levels, respectively. As we continue to grow, the curriculum needs to maintain alignment not only with the Illinois Learning Standards but as a PreK-12 system as well. A consistent and cohesive PreK-12 curriculum development process will incorporate and honor the curriculum work that has already been done. To assist us with this process, the district has developed a partnership with the Curriculum Leadership Institute.

What is the Curriculum Leadership Institute (CLI)?

Curriculum Leadership Institute (CLI) is a non-for-profit organization of curriculum specialists who have developed a model of school district reform and restructure. The Institute's restructuring model is a systemic approach that includes: (1) a strong theory base, (2) a comprehensive academic program governance component, (3) techniques for converting traditional curriculum patterns into results-based formats, and (4) processes for instruction and evaluation of student performance that are compatible with a results-based philosophy.

What is the Curriculum Coordinating Council (CCC)?

One of the very first steps in the curriculum development process is to establish a Curriculum Coordinating Council (CCC), which is a representative group of district personnel and community members that advises the Board of Education, through the Superintendent, in matters concerning curriculum, instruction and assessment. All professional decisions pertaining to curriculum, instruction and assessment must be reviewed and approved by the CCC before recommendation to the Board of Education's Applied Learning and Technology Sub-Committee. This means the CCC also serves as a communication link among the certified staff, Superintendent and Board of Education, and promotes and encourages communication among buildings and levels within the district. The CCC directs the work of all Subject Area Committees (SAC) and appoints and directs any other committees necessary for the development, implementation and long-term evaluation of curriculum, instruction and assessment. The CCC does not make managerial decisions related to buildings, personnel, budgets or other agenda items reserved for the administrative team, building principals or site councils.

What is a Subject Area Committee (SAC)?

The CCC appoints Subject Area Committees (SACs) in accordance with the long-range plan for curriculum development. A SAC is formed for each subject area to be analyzed. The primary responsibility of this group is to formulate a results-based curriculum.

District 202 now has an established Curriculum Coordinating Council along with four operating Subject Area Committees: Math, Language Arts, Science and Applied Arts. A Long Range Curriculum Development Plan has been developed and adopted by the Board of Education that outlines curriculum development for the next five years.
