Even though learning in the academic areas is the primary purpose of any school program, extra-curricular activities are also an extremely valuable area where students share accomplishments and learning experiences beyond those which occur in the classroom. A wide variety of activities are available and we strongly encourage all of our students to become involved in one or more of them.

Art Club - Meeting Dates (pdf)
Art Club runs once a week and is focusing on the use of art materials and creating artwork that goes beyond what we are able to do in the classroom. There is a $10.00 fee that covers the cost of supplies. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Cathy Derwin.

Cheerleading

Drauden Point cheerleading squad is open to all 7th and 8th grade girls. Tryouts will be held early in the fall. The girls will cheer for the 7th and 8th grade boy's basketball team beginning in November. The squad will be expected to attend practices and games, maintain expected grades as stated in the student handbook, support the boy's basketball team, and expand school spirit.

Drama Club
Drama Club runs from October to April with auditions being held in the middle of October. During the months of October, November and December students will attend extensive rehearsals three days, and once a week in January, February and March. In April students will be practicing three to five days a week preparing for the big production which is held at the end of April. Drama club includes singers, actors, backstage crew members and artists. Drama club is open to all students and all students receive a part in the musical.

Dance Club
Dance club meets every Thursday until 4:00 and is available to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls. We focus on technique, as well as learning different styles of dance. Dancers will also get the opportunity to choreograph and share their routines with the rest of the club. Dancers can join at any point in the year.  Please contact Ms. Boch at eboch@psd202.org for additional information or questions

Interscholastic Athletics
Our middle school attempts to accommodate the large number of students who wish to participate in athletic competitions against other schools. Sports which can handle a large number of students, such as cross-country, wrestling, and track, are operated on a no-cut, no tryout basis so that all who wish to join may participate.
Since only a limited number of students can participate in certain sports such as boys basketball (5), girls basketball (5), volleyball (6), or soccer (11) at one time, a limited number of players are selected for these teams, through a try-out process. To help accommodate more students, a seventh grade team and an eighth grade team are offered for boys basketball, girls basketball, and volleyball.

Our middle school offers a variety, of interscholastic sports throughout the school year for students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade.

Fall
Soccer…………………... Boys; Grades 7 and 8 Combined
Cross Country………….. Boys and Girls; Grades 6, 7, and 8 - No Try-outs
Volleyball……………….. Girls; Grades 7 and 8

Winter
Basketball………………. Boys; Grades 7 and 8
Basketball………………. Girls; Grades 7 and 8
Wrestling……………….. Boys and Girls; Grades 6, 7, and 8 - No Try-outs

Spring
Track……………………. Boys and Girls; Grades 6, 7, and 8 - No Try-outs
Soccer………………….. Girls, Grades 7 and 8 Combined

In order to participate in interscholastic athletics, students must maintain academic eligibility as outlined in Section Four of this handbook. This requirement is maintained so that parents and teachers are assured that involvement in interscholastic athletics will not interfere with our students' academic performance which, as noted earlier, is the primary purpose for their schooling.

Students may participate in one interscholastic sport during each season. To ensure safety, students must have a completed, signed sports physical on file in the school office, complete and return an insurance waiver form to the coach before participating in a try-out, practice, or game for any interscholastic sports team at our middle school. Physicals are good for one calendar year, and can apply to any sport within the year following the examination.

Intramural Sports
A range of intramural sports are also offered at our middle schools for sixth through eighth graders. Intramural offerings are based on student interest and may include softball, flag football, indoor soccer, basketball, and volleyball. All students are encouraged to participate in one or more intramural sports. There are no participation fees and sports physicals are not required. Intramurals are co-ed activities held after school two days per week.

Multicultural Club
Multicultural Club is a club that celebrates diversity within our school.  We will learn about other cultures and find ways to share this knowledge with the rest of the school.  Students will complete group and whole-school projects that will highlight differences yet encourage unity.  Our main project this year is Mix It Up at Lunch Day.  We will enjoy a different food every week!  This club meets every other Thursday from 2:35 to 4:15 in room 224.  Students are welcome from all grade levels and can join at any time throughout the year.  Sponsored by Miss Vivanco and Miss Ball.

Panther Press Newspaper
The Panther Press group consists of students who give us the insight of what is happening at Drauden Point Middle School through a quarterly school newspaper. The paper includes information on famous clubs such as Art and Multicultural club, as well as the seasons look into the Drauden Point Middle Schools Sports. Panther Press will also supply the latest information in entertainment and great practice for future journalism and photography. Panther Press is also in charge of the S.T.A.N.D. literary magazine, which Drauden Point Middle School releases once a year with our student’s own artwork, poetry, or short stories. Panther Press meets twice a week and works in smaller sessions so you can improve on your Journalism and photography credentials. Panther Press is open to all grade levels. Any group interested in joining Panther Press should contact Kristin Peebles at kpeebles@psd202.org.

Club Green - Meeting Schedule (pdf)
"Go Green!"  That's the motto for DPMS Club Green!   Mrs. Derwin and Mrs. Simonic will be offering a variety of eco friendly activities to Drauden Point students this school year, from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. EVERY OTHER Thursday afternoon.  Our goal is to promote an eco friendly attitude and awareness students can share with friends and family that will last a lifetime.  A few activities we have planned for this year will include adding to the landscaping around the school, managing a worm compost bin, holding an electronics drive, and working towards 100% participation in recycling by staff and students."

Homework Club
Homework Club is an after school program available to all students at Drauden Point. This program has been designed to give students a quiet place to study and work on homework or projects. It is held in Room 111 on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:45-3:30. Students can come to every meeting or only when they feel the need. Students are required to sign in and out each time they attend.

Spirit Club
Spirit Club is a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that generate ideas and ways to help the school and community.  We are focusing our club activities on the difference that one person can make in the lives of others. Mrs. Jaicomo and Mrs. Loats are the club sponsors. You can direct any questions about Spirit Club activities to either teacher.  We are  responsible for planning Panther Parties, The Talent Show, and  service projects.  Spirit Club is also responsible for the school store, which is open during lunch Tuesday and Thursday. Stay posted to the website and listed to the morning announcements for more ways to get involved with Spirit Club activities.

Yearbook
A yearbook for our middle school is developed by students under the direction of a faculty sponsor. Students who join the yearbook club meet after school to assist in photography, page layout, and cover design. Orders for the yearbook are taken at registration/fee day in August. The extra books will be sold on a first come, first serve basis in May.
