Classroom Learning

Information Literacy is a process through which students learn how to access and use information in a logical, critical and well defined manner in order to create a product. The model used in Information Literacy is known as the Big6™or the Super3™ depending upon the grade level of the student.

Essential Learning in District 202 is consistent throughout all schools and grade levels. Learning goals for Information Literacy provide a framework for what all students should know and be able to do by the end of the year. The following learning goals will be instilled in the Eagle Pointe student Information Literacy curriculum:

  • Locate and extract appropriate information needed to solve a problem using electronic and paper-based resources.
  • Evaluate, organize and communicate electronic information for validity, reliability and bias.
  • Access information responsibly, following District 202 policies and observing rules of "netiquette."
  • Analyze information accessed through telecommunications for safety.
  • Utilize Internet resources that address curriculum and technology integrated activities.

The Big6™
The Big6™ is geared for grades three and up. In these grade levels, students are successful in their curriculum assignments when they learn how to search and use information in a logical, well defined manner in order to create a product. The six steps in this process are: Task Definition, Information Seeking, Information Location and Access, Use of Information, Syntheses and Evaluation. In order to make it easier to remember these steps, Eagle Pointe students equate the six step process with the phrase IFY Super (pronounced "ifee") as explained below.

The Super3™
The Super3™ is geared for grades one and two. The same Big6™steps are involved in the Super3™ but they are simplified for the primary students. The steps in the Super3™ are: Plan It, Do It and Review It. This three step process is explained below.

Trash and Treasure
Using printed research material, students read a paragraph in its entirety. They then reread the paragraph one sentence at a time. If a sentence does not answer one of their questions, it is considered trash and the students ignore the information and move to the next sentence. If a sentence in the paragraph answers one of their questions, it is treasure. The students highlight this part of the paragraph, circle the “keywords” in the highlighted sentence, and write the keywords down as the answer to the question. As they create their product, the keywords serve as the basis for the information they will use. As students become more proficient in this process they will be able to distinguish trash or treasure without printing the research material.

Research Journal
The research journal is a device that can be used to guide students through the Big6™ steps when doing a research project. It is an effective organizational tool that can help students plan, organize and time manage projects.
