Book Check-Out Scheduling
Book check-out is only one of the many activities going on in the Media Center, but it's especially important for families to understand how it works. Students come to the Media Center for book check-out on a certain day and at a certain time unless their teacher has chosen to let them come as individuals when they need more books. For the most part kindergarten and first grade teachers have chosen to bring their whole classes, during a designated half hour time period, to check out books. Other grade level teachers send their students in small groups to check out books also during a designated time period. The Media Center Staff is always willing to help students select books, use the electronic card catalog, and find books on the shelf.

Book Check-Out Guidelines
Books are checked out for one week. Kindergartners may check out one book while grades 1-5 may check out two. When your child comes in to check out books the computer lets us know if he or she still has books out. If a student does have books out, we ask about those books in a respectful way. Kindergartners may not check out a book if they already have one out. Children in grades 1-5 may check out another book if they only have one of their books still out.

Overdue Books
We run the overdue list every Tuesday and provide the notices for teachers to distribute to students. If your child should bring home a First Overdue Notice, please regard this as a first communication with home. We are not accusing your child of wrongdoing, we are simply saying that we haven't checked the book back in as yet. If you know that the books were brought back to school, we appreciate your letting us know that. Sometimes the books get left in a backpack, or are put in a desk, or get mixed up with the classroom books. When we get a communication from a family in regard to a book on the overdue list, we hunt all over the Media Center for that book and alert your child's teacher to this concern so that a search can be made of desks and classroom libraries.
We continue to send out notices for a missing book until something is resolved.
- For Notices Two and Three - The notice requests that the student come to the Media Center to discuss the overdue book.
- For Notices Four and Greater - The family of the students will receive a letter concerning the overdue book(s) and will provide the cost of replacing the book.

Damaged Books
If a book is damaged, the student will be provided with the cost of replacing the book. Students will not be allowed to check out books until the matter has been resolved.
Please feel free to communicate with Rita Jump, the Media Specialist, about anything concerning the Media Center.
