This was, as expeccted, one of the very best sectionals in the state.

Congrats to Jake Arnold for qualifying in the 400 ... AND setting two stadium records at Plainfield Central.  Jake's time (48.4) ranks him 5th in the sectionals and will earn him a prime lane in one of the five heats of the state prelims Friday.

Congrats to our 4x1 team for qualifying and running a school record 42.5.  We had our best effort when the pressure was greatest.  Our time ranks us 16th in the state and we will most likely be seeded in the 3rd lane (9-lane track) in one of the five heats of the state prelims Friday.  This accomplishment allows us to take the entire 8-man relay team (four plus four alternates) to the state meet.

Congrats to Andrew Karas for running a personal best and school record 4:28 in the mile.  His time would have won some sectionals.  Andrew's 17-second improvement from last season indicates that he will be force in his next two seasons.

KEITH COLLINS ... what a great story.  Exactly four weeks ago at the same venue, Keith threw the shot a miserable 39-0.  Keith was embarrassed and at a crossroads.  Keith met with Coach Laughary at 8:00 A.M. the next morning and started training like he had never done before.  Eight days ago his PR stood at 44-1.  At sectional, Keith threw an amazing 49-0.  Good work Keith (and Coach Laughary).

Great job by our 4x2 and 4x4 teams running 1:31.6 and 3:31.3.  Jinks Arnold had a great day running his best of the year in all three relays.  George Frimpong is becoming a star.  His 21.3 and 50.9 splits were fantastic.  Dominique Ware ran his best of the season.  Dominique is our steadiest and most reliable sprinter.  Chester Bryant has been remarkable in his first-ever track season.

Fabian Quiroz continues to improve running 4:38.  We could qualify TWO in the 1600 next year.

Jacob Arnold, after running an amazing 21.4 in the 200 prelims (21.23 on my watch), did not run well in the 200 finals.  I lightened his work load by scratching him from the 100 ... knowing that he had not had big workouts in May due to tendinitis problems.  The 400 took a lot out of him.  I think Jake would have qualified if not for his first bad start in over a month.  Last year, Jake false started in the 200 at Sectional ... he probably was overly concerned with not making the same mistake.  Lane three had made up the stagger in the first 50 meters.  Despite the poor race, his time was a respectable 22.4.

The lights in the stadium went out during the slow heat of the 1600 ... and it was midnight dark.  Athletes lined the track with their cell phones to illuminate the track for the runners.  The meet was then delayed for about 15 minutes.  Just when you thought you've seen it all ...
