+++
This was Plainfield North's debut as a varsity track
team. Last year's team had only freshmen and sophomores. We
presently have 1800 students without a senior class. Next year we
expect 2600 students.
We had planned to take three large rental vans but ended up
with three minivans (not enough room). After a 3-hour delay, a
school bus arrived to take us 320 miles to Carbondale. In a
way, 15 hours on a school bus was a positive
thing. The 20 athletes and 3 coaches making the trip really got
to know each other.
We broke SIX school records and NINE school indoor records. Sophomore Andrew Karas shocked everyone with a 19-second PR
in the 3200 run (10:04). He ran mile splits of 5:01 and 5:03,
passing three runners on the last lap. His 2nd place finish was
our best of the day. Andrew came back with a strong mile (4:43)
and finished 5th.
Sophomore Jake Arnold stumbled badly out of the blocks but
still finished 9th in the 55. His 6.74 in the prelims ranked
him 3rd out of a field of 61 sprinters. Jake's opening legs
in the 4x2 (22.9) and 4x4 (53.5) would have placed him 2nd in the open
200 and open 400.
Our 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams both placed 4th but showed
great promise (two sophomores, two juniors).
Junior Fabian Quiroz ran smoothly in the 3200 (10:40) and
was impressive in the 1600 (4:58).
6-6 297-pound Junior, T.J. Cox, threw 45-feet in the Shot
... four feet further than his best effort of 2006. Carlo
Bumanlog (Junior) also PR'd with a put of 44-11.
Freshman Devonta Davis won his heat of the 200 (25.2) and
had a first-time-ever long jump of 18-2. Devonta (new to track
& field) is an outstanding football and basketball player.
The meet was dominated by the best team in Illinois
... Cahokia ... even though their basketball players
were not present. The other two impressive teams were Belleville
West and Herrin. Both Belleville West and Herrin
will compete at Plainfield North next week (along with Champaign
Centennial, Mt. Vernon, and Stanford Olympia).
The competition at this meet was not as good as in previous
years due to the absence of four good teams from Tennessee.

We look forward to adding basketball players to our roster
this week. Currently 108 boys have come out for track.
Next meet: Plainfield North Indoor Invitational,
Saturday March 10, 10 AM - 2 PM.
Go Tigers.
